Gifted and Talented Teacher Awarded UConn NEAG School of Education
Teacher of the Year
Patricia Pinney,
who has been a teacher of the Gifted and Talented at Willington Public
Schools since 1994, has been selected to receive the prestigious
Outstanding School Educator Award by the Neag School of Education
Alumni Society. |
She was chosen because of her excellence as a teacher, her dedication
to her students and her service to her community.
Her colleagues in the Willington Public
School System recognize her as a highly organized, enthusiastic team
player. In a letter of support, her principal, David Harding, states
that Pat is “one of the finest teachers I have ever worked with” and
he feels that he is “a better administrator for having worked with
her”.
Patricia received her B.S. Degree in 1973 and her M.A. Degree in 1998
from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut and
has taught for 15 years in Connecticut schools. She began her career
in Enfield, Connecticut as a Learning Disabilities Resource Room
Teacher. In Willington she coordinates the regional History Day
program, runs a drama club and a student broadcast news club. She
oversees Discovery Place, the school-wide Gifted and Talented Program.
Her drama productions have capitalized on student interest and
curiosity and she continually works to involve as many students as
possible. She has directed 12 Shakespeare plays and co-directed 4
musicals. She has Math Olympiad teams at the fourth, fifth and sixth
grade levels and has also worked with the eighth grade language arts
teacher to develop a film project. This is the fourth year that her
students will submit a completed film at an annual film festival.
Pat is recognized as an efficient
leader, innovator and role model by those who have team taught with
her. She has served on the District Staff Development Committee
teaching research skills to the entire staff and bringing the
possibility for individual student research into the classrooms. At
Confratute she presented an Open Forum on National History Day and
also presented the National History Day program at the New England
Conference on Gifted and Talented Education and in Cromwell as part of
their regional staff development day and with the State History Day
Coordinator at the CT Council of Social Studies Teacher’s Conference.
She works with Masters Level students from the University of
Connecticut and helps teachers see how technology can be infused into
the curriculum. Last fall she presented the student film writing and
production project at the Connecticut Council of Teachers of English
conference held at UConn.
